Canthaxanthin is a biological pigment with superior antioxidant qualities, like Astaxanthin and Zeaxanthin. It is a carotenoid, but cannot be converted by the body to Vitamin A. Canthaxanthin occurs naturally in both animals and plants, and is responsible for red and pink colors in plants.

In the plant kingdom, Canthaxanthin is used to protect the plant from the harmful effects of UV radiation. In the animal kingdom, it has been successfully used as a skin protectant and powerful free-radical scavenger.

Canthaxanthin is approved by the FDA for use in food as a coloring agent. It's a component of most sunless tanning products, and when taken in large quantities can induce a beautiful bronzed look to your skin.

Interestingly, Canthaxanthin has been used for lessening the pain that exposure to sun brings on in people suffering from erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), a rare inherited disease characterized by sensitivity to sunlight, and polymorphous light eruptions, a less rare hypersensitivity to ultraviolet light A (UVA) or ultraviolet light B (UVB).
